The Overlooked TN Visa for Canadian and Mexican Professionals

Updated: Dec 18, 2025

Map of the US with Canada and Mexico flags. Arrows show movement. Text: "The TN Visa: A Faster Way to Hire" with benefits listed.

No lottery. No labor certification. No USCIS waiting times. The TN visa is immigration’s best-kept secret for hiring North American talent.

Created under USMCA (formerly NAFTA), this visa is specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals.

I’ve watched companies struggle for years trying to secure H-1B visas when they had TN-eligible candidates sitting right in front of them.

The process is straightforward.

Canadian citizens apply directly at the U.S. border with a job offer letter and supporting documents.

If approved at the border, they start working that day.

Mexican citizens apply at a U.S. consulate, with turnaround typically in a few weeks.

The employer provides a support letter confirming the job title, main duties, salary, and that the position qualifies as a TN occupation.

The candidate needs citizenship in Canada or Mexico, a valid job offer in an eligible occupation, and the required degree or credentials.

TN occupations include engineers, accountants, scientists, management consultants, computer systems analysts, lawyers, graphic designers, and physical therapists.

There are over 60 professional categories on the list.

Visas are granted for up to 3 years and renewable indefinitely.

There’s no annual cap. Full-time or part-time work is allowed. Switching employers just requires a new application.

Lower legal and administrative costs compared to other visa types.

Unlike some temporary visas, there’s no requirement to prove intent to return home.

Spouses and children under 21 can join the TN visa holder in the U.S. for study purposes, but cannot work.

The limitation is citizenship — only Canadian and Mexican nationals qualify.

If you can tap into that talent pool, you have access to an efficient pathway that most employers overlook completely.

This is why TN visas remain one of the most underutilized tools in U.S. immigration law.

The option exists.

The demand exists.

The connection between the two rarely happens.
