Navigating the 2025 U.S. Citizenship Process and Why Green Card Holders Should Act Now

I recently helped an 80-year-old client submit his citizenship application after he’d procrastinated for 50 years.
"Why now?" I asked.
His answer was simple:
"I want to die an American”
Another client echoed a similarly heavy sentiment:
“I can't risk losing everything I've built here"
With immigration policies becoming increasingly unpredictable, I'm seeing a surge in green card holders taking this final step to protect themselves since January.
Here's what you need to know about the U.S. naturalization (citizenship) process in 2025:
• You're eligible for U.S. Citizenship after 5 years as a Legal Permanent Resident/Green Card holder, or 3 years if married to a US citizen;
• You can submit your application up to 90 days before your eligibility date;
• The process takes 8-12 months on average (but we have had success within 2-4 months for our recent clients who apply online!);
• You'll need to pass an English test and civics exam (with some exemptions); and
• The application fee is $725 (fee waivers available).
The benefits extend far beyond peace of mind:
1. You can't be deported (except in extremely rare circumstances);
2. You can obtain voting rights;
3. You can travel with a US passport (no more worrying about re-entry at the border!)
4. You will become eligible for certain government jobs; and
5. You can sponsor family members for immigration benefits more easily and quickly.
Many clients tell me they waited because the process seemed daunting, or they were "comfortable enough" with permanent residency. Others hesitated to apply due to perceived tax consequences (check with your CPA if you are already a “United States Person” for tax purposes as a Green Card holder). This kept them and their family members in immigration limbo for longer than necessary.
In today's climate, waiting carries risks that didn't exist before.
If you've been putting off citizenship, now is the time to take action. Don't wait until policy changes make it more difficult—or impossible. Our clients were thrilled to take their oath ceremony within just a few months of their application submission. Some even achieved citizenship in time to vote in the last election!
